Where can I change how the automatic excerpts are styled? I would like to put a space before the (...) and I also am not a fan of how it inserts one or two line breaks between the excerpt and the rest of the content - where can I edit that to make the sentence seamless?

You will have to hack the core plugin to do this. You want inline-posts.php in the /modules/ folder. Just do a search for "..." and that is the code you need to change.
